lyrics
Verse 1
Spring in a single-room sky,
At the doorway where the rent was high.
Traded hopes for the comfort of cash,
Shut her down: don’t make a sound.
Counting the bruises, spelling prayers.
Verse 2
A stranger wiped the tears.
Spoke of open streets, of someplace with space.
Took the bag.
They sped past streetlamps, past the alleys and the pain,
Felt the whole world turning like a key in a chain.
Chorus
Another night, another grave.
Another prayer that fades away.
Another soul lost in splayed.
Luck is a blessing — failure is
test. We're good at finding names.
Verse 3
Led to a flat with the lights low,
Whispered soft and slow.
Steel drew lines across the skin; scream ran out on the shell.
No footsteps, no sound.
Morning found a body where a prayer was around,
A life uncounted, a life
misunderstood.
Bridge
Finger-point saints who’d washed their hands instead.
The tree forgot its oldest limb; the worm found brand-new leaves.
Roots remember what the wind can't keep.
The night knows the supplicant;
Would that make change?
Chorus
Another night, another grave.
Another prayer that fades away.
Another soul lost in splayed.
Luck is a blessing — failure is a test. We're good at finding names.
Meaning
“The Cost” is a dark story about a young girl forced into marriage because her family needs money. Her life becomes something others are willing to trade for survival, leaving her trapped in a future she never chose.
When a stranger offers her what sounds like freedom, she believes she has finally found someone who can take her somewhere better. She leaves with him, hoping to escape the life forced upon her.
But the freedom she trusted becomes another kind of nightmare.
The song follows the devastating consequences of poverty, forced marriage, manipulation, and misplaced trust—and the way people can destroy a victim twice: first through what they do to her, and then by blaming her for what happened.
“The Cost” is about what people are willing to sacrifice when survival has a price—and who ends up paying it.
